Description
The artist did a most credible job in tinting this image of a 93rd Highlander (Sutherland) Regiment of Foot. His doublet is trimmed in white and appears to be wearing the Government tartan kilt. The campaign medals appear to be (going by the period of the image and the unit’s history), the Crimea Medal (1854-1856), and the Indian Mutiny medal (1857- 1857). The ribbon color on the Crimea looks accurate, but the solid red of the Indian Mutiny is solid red. It may have been too much to concentrate on painting in white stripes on the ribbon.
The 93rd as in the Crimea in 1854, and left that place for Indian in 1857.
Photographed by Peter Lothian, Edinburgh. Pencil inscription on the reverse reads, ” 93 ird Highland Soldier / “Scotland.”
Very good- fine condition.
From the Michael McAfee Collection.
