Description

ID’d 23rd Maine Infantry Fork & Knife.

This is an original Civil War used fork and knife belonging to John M. Bumpus, Co. I, 23rd Maine Infantry.  Bumpus was from Livermore, Maine, and enlisted on September 29, 1862, and mustered out in July of 1863, a nine month regiment.

The regiment left Portland for Washington, D.C. on October 18th, arriving two days latter.  During their time in service the regiment was ordered to guard possible areas of crossing by confederates along the Potomac River; and in late May sent to Alexandria, digging rifle pits, building barricades across streets, and picketing outside of the city, and later was positioned across from Harper’s Ferry until ordered home.  The regiment lost about 50 men by disease and 2 by  accident.

The knife is blade marked, “HENRY……./ & BROT /SHEFF….” possible Henry H. Taylor & Brother, Sheffield Cutlers. No marking on the fork. Identical patina to the wooden handles, and the finely carved initials, and unit markings so honest – PERIOD wear.

Overall in very good condition.
