IW Era – U.S. Army Officer’s Chapeau, belt with plate & Lt. Colonel knots grouping.

The Chapeau’s black beaver felt is generally in good shape with a few small areas of wear along the edges where it is worn. The gilt tassels, both front and back has toning with age, but in nice condition. The cockade with bullion eagle also has nice toning and light wear. The ostrich feathers are intact, but has small pieces coming undone due to the age of the item. The sweatband is intact with a few areas of wear from use and age along the brim. The liner inside has areas of wear, but in good condition overall.

The chapeau comes with a very nice seldom seen wooden case with three brass hooks to help keep it closed. The inside is unmarked and has little wear and markings. The outside is painted black with chipping and light wear on the surface.

The early IW era belt with plate and metal box (included) are in very nice condition, the belt is a nice officer’s field grade belt. It has wear, dark toning and patina throughout. Both straps are intact and brass clips in very nice condition. The belt plate, does not have a maker’s mark on the back. It does have dark toning on the front with areas of scuffing and wear. The metal box has wear, small dents and paint loss in parts. The inside of the box reads, “THE WARNOCK UNIFORM CO. 19 & 21 W. 31st ST. NEW YORK”.

The two shoulder knots in this grouping have gilt cording, white wool background (for the infantry – adopted in 1880 from the sky blue) and silver bullion rank for a Lt. Colonel. They have a nice quality high relief button with applied federal eagle bearing the “I” for infantry in the shield. The underside of these knots are finished in black wool lining. The knots are marked “LEOPOLD MAGNUS NEW YORK”.
