Although untitled, this oil on canvas was painted by William Eaton (1848-1922) known for landscapes and illustration works. The painting portrays General LaFayette visiting Washington’s Tomb at Mount Vernon in 1824, while on his visit to this country that lasted a year. LaFayette, as a young French General, was one of Washington’s most loyal and dependable general’s serving with distinction in the Revolutionary War, and present at the surrender of the British Army at Yorktown, Va in 1781.
