Refer to American Military Belt Plates, By O’Donnell & Campbell, page 259, Plate 409.
Militia Eagle Belt Plate, 1845-1860, made of brass/ bronze metal with a bronze patina. Appears that traces of silver finish in protected areas. Die struck, with applied tongue which might be a period replacement. The original iron keepers still intact on bar. Similar to several similar patterns of the same era, all stocked by military retailers.
The period in which used most commonly is the earlier range of 1845-55, with usage into the early part of the Civil War.
There are some slight bends on corners, but otherwise a most pleasing design and in very good condition.
