Model 1850 Ames Staff & Field Sword.
The sword is in fine condition overall. Marked Ames Mfg Co. Chicopee, Mass. The 32 inch blade shows a blend of original bright and luster with blemishing. Over the years, perhaps a combination of lack of care, and two much cleaning, has dulled the appearance, but yet still a respectable blade. U.S. and florals on one side, with the federal eagle and panoply on the other, (Much better than the photos show!). The sharkskin grip is fine with light wear, and most of the original gilt remaining on the hilt. The scabbard exhibits the same degree of gilt remaining with a vibrant blue finish to the metal. A light surface rust was lying on the surface but I cleaned nearly all of it away, and a continued wiping down with an oiled rag would remove even more of what little remains.
A beautiful sword.
