New England Militia Shako With Gilt Plate & Gilt Chain. Circa 1830 shako of the bell crown type, but not as flared at the crown. The visor is certainly different, say something on the scolloped design. and straight out, not sloping downward. The gilt Stock Pattern is original to the shako and held in place by leather thongs, Leather socket sewn to hold plume. Missing the sweatband. No label. Base to the top of the crown is 7 inches. The crown is sunken slightly, and does not show at all.
The gilt chains run fore and aft, and stitching that once them in place at the base, front and back are broken, This chain with the large open loops are period and correct, as other references show these on several example in this period. The plate just about perfect in condition.
The feather plum I have added along with the eagle sock, both having age, but a bit later. This shakos look a bit undress without a plume of any type.
You don’t need to do anything to this piece. A super example, and a different pattern at that!
