Traveling trunk ID plate of brass for Captain Silas Billings of Hatfield, Massachusetts. He was born 13 November, 1741, and died 6 June, 1808 and laid to rest in at Hill Cemetery, Hatfield. Silas would have been 33 years of age when the British marched on Lexington and Concord. I did not find any record that would place him having service in the Revolution on a quick search. His rank probably came while serving in the Hampshire Co. (Mass), militia later on.
The oval brass plate is finely engraved, and measures 2 5/8 inches in length. Four brass prongs were cut when removed from a leather ( small piece of leather affixed to the back), trunk. I can’t describe the trunk, as I never saw it.
