Personal Calling Card of Dr. Dinwiddie Brazier Phillips, MD- Later Confederate Navy – Served On CSS Virginia During the Battle Against USS Monitor

Personal Card of Dr. Dinwiddie Brazier Phillips, MD. This card from the famous Confederate Surgeon, was enclosed with a letter dated Sept. 28th, 1852, written by a friend, James F. Forbes, from Warrenton, Virginia. Forbes states, “My friend Dr Phillpps will hand you this (the letter), he intends attending a course of lecture in Philadelphia…”  MD, U.S. Navy   Will be happy to see Dr. Forbes (W.S. – James’ brother) at the Washington House where he will be at this afternoon.”  Printed on a white glossy stock.  The cover has the written information by James F. Forbes.

Surgeon Philipps 1826-1892, was born in Fauquier Co,. Virginia and died in Orange, Virginia. Appointed Asst. Surgeon, U.S. Navy in 1847. resigned from the Navy on May 6, 1861, and joined the Confederate States Navy. While the Confederate Navy was waiting for ships, many surgeons like Dr. Philipps served with army units in the field, and hospitals. His first ship assignment was aboard the CSS Nashville. He had other assignments on ship, but the most famous was the CSS Virginia (old USS Merrimack), and was on that ironclad when it fought the USS Monitor, May 8-9, 1862 off Hampton Roads.

After the war, Philipps became a chemist and ran a drugstore in Lynchburg, Virginia.  

Nice historic piece.  Overall very good condition with card having some soiling and rubbing.
