Description

Pre Civil War Militia Officer’s Helmet Pommel Sword By Ames.

A gorgeous sword with most of the original gilt remaining on all areas.  Mother of Pearl grips with twisted gilt wire. Plumed helmet pommel which is linked to the double cross guard quillon by 2 strands of gilt chain.  The counter guard has a spread winged American eagle.

The scabbard is marked, “AMES MFG. CO./ CHICOPEE/ MASS.” 2 upper rings on acanthus leaf mount, middle mount w ith acanthus leaf and a standing eagle in center medallion.  The drag is a fancy 6 inch leaf and acorns on the front, plain on the reverse.  There is one dint on both sides of the scabbard between the lower mount and drag (no ridanger at all of any breakage, or weakness for that matter).

A finely engraved blade has most of the frosty etching, with floral patterns on both sides; left side has crossed flags below a sunburst design, and the right has an eagle with the motto, “E. Pluribus Unum.”  The blade has a narrow fuller on both sides that runs approximately 11 inches.  Very light scratching in a few areas on the blade, with some minor blemishing in just a few areas.

A very pleasing sword, one worn in the period of the 1840-1860 era, and on occasion seen being worn by officers during the Civil War.
