Description

Two confederate soldiers lie in this trench at Fort Mahone, part of the defenses of Petersburg, Va, in this photograph taken in April of 1865.  One of the soldiers is hard to see, as his body is mostly covered in the debris from the bombardment of union guns. Another rebel soldier lies not far away, stripped of all his weapons and accoutrements.

The caption on the reverse reads in part, “This  Picture is a good view of the covered ways inside the Rebel Fort Mahone.  Union soldiers had to charge up and down the obstructions….”   Taken by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., New York.

Photo quality is very good, some light soiling and mostly on the reverse of image.
