Unissued 1861Cartridge Box Without Plate, made by J.Boyd & Sons / Boston / Manufacturers of Army Accoutrements. The box is made for .58 caliber cartridges, and complete with bright tin inserts. The belt loops are riveted beneath the leather sling guides. The size and marking suggest this is an early pattern 1861 box.
The flap is cut for the box plate, and never had one attached. The surface black leather is very thin and has worn away evenly overall exposing the brownish nature of the leather used. Light wear overall on the edges, closure tab, and high points on the belt loops, etc. The sling buckles show a large percentage of the original black Japanning.
A nice early war cartridge box.
