Description

USRS VERMONT Cap Tally – Circa Spanish War Era

Ordered by the Navy in 1816, but not laid down until two years later at the Boston Navy Yard. This 74 gun ship was not completed until 1825, yet remained un-commissioned until 1848.  During the Civil War years, Vermont was used as a receiving ship with much of her time stationed at Port Royal, South Carolina. In addition to her receiving ship duties, Vermont was also used as an Ordnance and Hospital ship. After the Civil War, Vermont returned north, to the New York Navy Yard, where she remained for 37 years until stricken from the rolls. She was sold in 1902.

This tally could be Spanish War era or a bit earlier.

The black silk tally is 38 inches long x 1.5 inches wide.  A good amount of gold remains on the lettering.  Light wear and typical creases and folds.
